About the event

Give your old t-shirts new life (or someone else's!) in this 2 part t-shirt quilt sewing class with Connie Biselx!  This registration includes BOTH days Feb 24 and March 16 at 6pm (each time is about 3 hours).  Read on for the cozy quilt details!

Class Part 1 on Sat, Feb 24 6pm:

  • Determine the layout of your t-shirts
  • Prep t-shirts with iron on interfacing (to make them easier to sew)
  • Cut out blocks with rotary cutter

Homework in-between:  Finish interfacing and cutting out your blocks.

Class Part 2 on Sat, March 16 6pm:

  • Sew blocks
  • Talk through the options to turn your quilt top (sewn t-shirt blocks) into a usable quilt.  You will be set up with all the resources you need to complete the quilt.  Everything from very simple and inexpensive to paying a professional to finish it for you and everything in between!

PLEASE NOTE:  You won't finish the t-shirt quilt top in class. You will need a sewing machine or iron at home (or borrow one from a family/friend!) to work on outside of class.  We may be able to figure out you renting an Unglued machine to use in our Craftorium when there isn't a workshop, but currently that would only be weekdays usually 10am-3pm as a heads up!  Just let us know if you'd like more info on that option.

Your registration includes:  instruction to sew the quilt top using your own t-shirts (see details below!) and the rest of the supplies to create the quilt top (a 48"x60").  Connie will also recommend very inexpensive options to finish it (ie. the "bottom" of the quilt to attach your top you create to).  You may even have what you need in your home already!

What to bring to the first class:

*12-30+ t-shirts (you can get more than one block out of a t-shirt especially if they have names and logos on more than one side of the shirt.)

(* Based on how big you want to make your quilt.  See below.)

How many shirts/how big will the quilt be:

That is up to you!  You are the artist and maker, you get to decide how big you want this to be.  But here are some things to consider as you prepare for class:

  • The bigger you make it the more work and additional cost you create!
  • Block size - how big we will cut the t-shirts: 12" squares
  • You can get more than one block out of a T-Shirt.
  • The quilt math:  if you use 12 t-shirt blocks, 3 across the top by 4 down you get a finished quilt that is 36"x48".  That's not really going to cover a normal sized human.  But it could be just for decoration, or you can add borders to make it bigger. (Connie will explain in class).

Optional quilt sizes and what you need to bring to the first class:

12 T-shirt blocks (3x4)

36"x48"

(You can add fabric borders to make it bigger.  Great option if you don't have very many t-shirts to work with).

20 T-shirts (4x5)

48"x60"

30 T-shirts (5x6)

60"x72"

Additional interfacing (Pellon 906F Fusible Sheerweight Interfacing) is required.  You don't need to bring it to the first class, I will have enough to get you started.

This workshop and registration is for 2 total days:  Sat, Feb 24 6pm and Sat, March 16 at 6pm at the Unglued Craftatorium at Brewhalla - 1702 1st Ave N, Fargo, ND 58102 (attached to Drekker Brewing - you'll find this workshop room on Brewhalla's 2nd floor!).  Ages middle school to adult.  Each attendee must be a ticket holder.
